History of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University

Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University(BSMRAU) was established in 1998 as a public university with the act (Act no. 16) promulgated by the Parliament, Government of Bangladesh. The university was, in fact, established by transforming the Institute of Post Graduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA). IPSA was originally established as Bangladesh College of Aagricultural Science (BCAS) in 1983 as an academic organ of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and academically affiliated with Bangladesh Agricultural University until 1991. In 1991, IPSA was made an autonomous institution. henceforth IPSA started its truly Course Credit based M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The graduate program of IPSA was developed by competent team of IPSA teachers led by Prof. L. M. Eisgruver of the Oregon State university (OSU), USA under the tripertite cooperratiion of JAICA-USAID-GOB.

Dhaka National Medical College

Dhaka National Medical College is a school of medicine in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Its current principal is Prof. Dr. Md. Aref Rahman. It is one of the best private medical college within Bangladesh. Dhaka National Medical College started its formal academic MBBS course from 1995 based on its predecessor Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital. The National Medical Institute Hospital was established in 1925 by some philanthropist of the then East Bengal as a part of non-co-operation movement against the British rule & continued to produce National doctors to provide health care to the common people. The Institute was closed in 1965 but the hospital continued to function with the help of local elites & social workers. After independence in 1971, Govt. took special interest in this hospital & the hospital started getting regular Govt. funding. Thereafter, the then Health Advisor late Prof. Md. Ibrahim laid the foundation stone of the present hospital building in 1976. With the untiring effort and interest of the then Chairman of the managing Committee, Mr. Sadeque Hossain Khoka, the College was established & inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on 15th October 1995. Since then the College is growing fast & has become one of the best private medical college in the country. The 7 (seven) storied College building which is part of 15 storied one, is already completed and accommodating the various academic departments of the College with planned lecture galleries, modern well equipped practical Labs, central library, computer lab, prayer rooms, common rooms for the students as well as administrative block. An attached female students hostel is in the offing. The College has a band of dedicated experienced teachers well qualified & well trained from home & abroad who are engaged in imparting education & training to the students. With a vision to be the best in the field of medical education and research and to remain in the forefront of health care providers, Dhaka National Medical College is trying to be one of the trend setter institute in the country and demonstrate a high standard of medical education.

Dhaka commerce college central library exits from the very beginning of the college and serving effectively to its clientele. The library mainly focuses on the commerce subjects but also give emphasis on other collections. The library contains every ingredients of a modern library.

The library user can have the facilities in two different ways. They can use the Central library or they can use Seminar library.

There are seven-seminar libraries which are attached to the concern department, apart from the central library. The functions and activities of these seminar libraries are guided by the central library.

Layout: The central library has a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. It has a wide & large stock area of 4500 sq. feet, Circulation section, Acquisition and processing section, Reference area, separate reading room of 2100 sq. feet for teacher and students. Major part of the library is air-conditioned.

User: All the students, teachers, officers and staff of the college can use the library. To use the library they need to produce library card.

Library orientation: The library arranges Orientation programme for new students.

Library services: Reader services, Reference services and CAS services are provided to all the users. SDI is provided to teachers (need based).

Library hour: The library remains open from 8am. to 5pm.Without any interruption of all working days.

Collection: The total collection of the college is about 35,000. The present collections of central library (excluding seminar libraries) are Book 17,000, a good collection of Magazine and Journal. A wide collection of Reference books, News papers are also preserved, and each of the seminar libraries has collection of 1500 to 3000 books.

The college educates from Higher Secondary Certificate level (HSC) to post graduate level. The college has honours courses in seven subjects and a broader range of Masters courses. The college provides excellent HSC level education in Business Studies.

Introduction: Dhaka Medical College stands as an icon of our country. It started its journey in 1946 in a building, built in the light of colonial architecture in 1902m in the centre of the city between Dhaka University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in the Ramna area. The majestic building now accommodates the famous Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Dhaka Medical College has played a pioneering role in the development of medical science, health care delivery and in nation building activities of the country. The college boasts of a highly reputed array of intellectuals and academics. Its students are extremely talented with an intense affinity for gathering knowledge to attain excellence and deep sense of commitment to serve the nation.

The college began with an MBBS course admitted around 100 students each year. In 1982 post graduate courses were started with Diploma in Anesthesiology and Gynecology and Obstetrics. Later other post graduate diplomas in various disciplines were added. Masters degree courses in many disciplines were introduced from 2002. Presently 34 post-graduate courses are run by the college.

There are also short term training courses of different departments which are run in collaboration with various organizations.

Facts of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital

For the top 180 freshmen places in 2006 in whole Bangladesh, nearly 18000 (eighteen thousand) applicants sat for the medical college entrance examination. The different batches of Dhaka Medical College are named with the prefix K, as for example K-57, which denotes the 57th batch of the college that was admitted in 2000. The meaning of the prefix K is still mysterious and there are different opinions. Some say, K, being the 11th letter of the English alphabet, signifies the 11th medical college of the-then Indian subcontinent. Some other opine that K is for Kalcutta, as many of the first students came from Calcutta Medical college.

History of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital

Established in 1946,first class started on 10th July, so 10th July celebrated as |"DMC DAY|". It took about 10 years for the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital to start operations because of bureaucratic entanglements. The Dhaka Medical College and its affiliate, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, were accommodated in a building constructed in 1904 as the Secretariat Building for the province of East Bengal and Assam. The building was transferred to the University of Dhaka in 1921. One part of it was converted into the university's medical centre, one part into a student dormitory, while the residual part was allotted for use as the academic wing of the Faculty of Arts.
The whole building was used as "American Base Hospital" during World War II. When the Americans left, a one hundred bed hospital was established in it. This created the base of the DMCH, which at the beginning had only four departments - Medical, Surgery, Gynaecology and ENT. The institute did not have any hostel for students. Male students were allowed to reside in Dhaka University's student halls, but girls had to attend classes from their homes. After the Partition of Bengal in 1947, a large number of students came from Calcutta Medical College and sought admission in Dhaka Medical College. Similarly, many left Dhaka Medical College for Calcutta. The college and hospital premises were expanded in new temporary sheds, some of which were built for outdoor services of the hospital and some others for students' hostels. New buildings for hostel, college and hospital were constructed in phases: a hostel for girls in 1952, a hostel for male students in 1954-55, a new complex of academic buildings in 1955, and a hostel for internee doctors in 1974-75.
